- Select wires, cables, connectors, terminals, shielding, and protective components based on electrical, mechanical, environmental, and manufacturing requirements.
- Define harness routing, branching, retention, and protection strategies, ensuring compatibility with the robot's electrical architecture and mechanical structure.
- Assess and mitigate risks related to bend radius, torsion, abrasion, fatigue, and interference, particularly around dynamic joints and moving assemblies.
- Ensure reliable power distribution, signal integrity, and EMI/EMC performance through appropriate wiring, shielding, and grounding strategies.
- B. Electrical Interface Design and Documentation
- Develop wiring harness diagrams, pinout tables, connector interfaces, wire lists, BOMs, and manufacturing drawings based on system-level requirements.
- Define connector-to-connector mapping, terminal assignments, wire specifications, and grounding requirements.
- Perform electrical design calculations and reviews to verify current capacity, voltage drop, insulation ratings, electrical protection, and communication interface requirements.
- Maintain accurate, traceable, and revision-controlled documentation in accordance with PLM and engineering change processes.
- C. Verification, Validation, and Reliability
- Define harness verification requirements, acceptance criteria, and inspection procedures covering continuity, short circuits, insulation resistance, etc.
- Plan and support design verification and validation activities, including mechanical and environmental reliability testing such as flex, torsion, vibration, and abrasion.
- Troubleshoot harness-related electrical and integration issues, conduct root cause analysis, and drive corrective and preventive actions to improve reliability.
- D. Design for Manufacturing and Production Readiness
- Develop SOR documents, DFMEA documents, harness drawings, BOMs, assembly instructions, and inspection criteria to support prototype builds and production release.
- Apply DFM, DFA, and serviceability principles to ensure harnesses are manufacturable, easy to assemble, inspect, install, and maintain.
- Define critical manufacturing requirements for wire preparation, crimping, termination, connector assembly, shielding, and cable protection.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams and suppliers to resolve fabrication and quality issues, improve processes, and implement design changes throughout the product lifecycle.
- E. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Technical Leadership
- Work closely with mechanical, firmware, and system engineering teams to ensure seamless harness integration and compliance with system requirements.
